Backups and iOS 6

Warning

You can still backup Gun Log as before, via iTunes.
Do not take a backup from Gun Log +P and try to install it into Gun Log. The iCloud information in the database will not allow this to work as of iOS 6.

With Gun Log +P v5.8 do not take the Shooting_Buddy_iCloud.sqlite file and try to use it with Gun Log. If you are using Gun Log +P with "Documents & Data" turned off then Gun Log +P will have a file called Shooting_Buddy.sqlite which can be used with Gun Log or Gun Log SPC.

With Gun Log +P v5.9 and Gun Log v5.9 or Gun Log SPC 5.9 you can transfer the Gun Log +P file "Shooting_Buddy_iCloud.sqlite" to Gun Log or Gun Log SPC if you rename it to "Shooting_Buddy.sqlite" once you transfer it.

Backup Instructions

(These directions are copied from this previous post on January 13, 2012. As a long time developer I have been stung too many times by failures.)

Since Gun Log (3.6) there is support for iTunes file sharing. (Description of iTunes File Sharing) This feature allows you to save the data to your computer via iTunes. It is not automatic. You have to do it. Through iTunes you can save the Gun Log's database for personal backups. The Gun Log database is called Shooting_Buddy and you will see it in iTunes.

In iTunes select your device and then select the "Apps" details for that device in the center panel. You will see a section near the bottom for "File Sharing". Select Gun Log and you will see a file called Shooting_Buddy.sqlite. That is the database. Drag the file to the desktop of your computer. You have a backup now of all of your data.

I back up my primary device after every range session or ammo inventory session. That way I can replace it if I delete Gun Log or some iTunes sync or upgrade fails.

Backing up and Transferring your Data

Do not take a Gun Log +P backup and try to save/restore it to Gun Log or Gun Log SPC, the iCloud data from Gun Log +P will cause a "save error" message to be displayed unless you are running 5.9 or higher.

These steps are the same for all of the Gun Log Apps.

You need a desktop computer and iTunes.

Step one. Connect iOS device to computer using the USB cable and open iTunes.

Step two. Select you iOS device in the left panel of iTunes.

Step three. Select "Apps". "Apps" is near the top middle.

Step four. Select "Gun Log". It is listed under "File Sharing" and below "File Sharing" is "Apps".

Step five. Select "Shooting_Buddy.sqlite".

Step six. Drag the sqlite file to your desktop or some similar location.

Gun Log SPC, Gun Log, and Gun Log +P

If you are using Gun Log SPC or Gun Log you can take the back up and transfer it to another device. Just hook up the device to your computer and in iTunes File Sharing just drag "Shooting_Buddy.sqlite" to the app's documents. It's just that simple.

Gun Log 5.3

Gun Log 5.3 is available! Please backup your data before doing an update.

If you ever have a problem with an update, don't delete the app without backing up the data first!

Gun Log 5.3 adds a new ballistic report that can be saved. This report is not associated to a weapon configuration or ammo. Instead you enter in the values needed for the calculation and save them.

Gun Log 5.4 has been submitted as well. 5.4 has a time picker as well as a date picker.

Gun Log 5.2 is available!

Note that the Gun Log 5.2 database is not compatible with Gun Log +P 2.7. Do not copy the Gun Log 5.2 database onto Gun Log +P 2.7 or earlier. It will not work.

Back up your data before the upgrade. DO IT! :-)

Gun Log 5.2 adds the ability to save ballistic "sets".

Now you can save the ballistic set instead of having to pick the weapon, weapon configuration, and ammunition each time.

Also, notice the details at the top of the drop table, Z means zero, SH is the sight height, MV is the muzzle velocity, and BC is the ballistic coefficient. I couldn't always remember what the values were and would have to open the config to see the sight height or zero. Now this quick info allows me to know I am looking at the right data.

Gun Log 5.2 has reached a point of functionality that I can now go back and get Gun Log +P caught back up with all of the new changes found in the 5.x releases of Gun Log.

Thank you for your support. For a price less than a box of .22 Long Rifle ammo I think Gun Log represents a great value for those interested in logging, tracking, and analyzing their firearms and shooting data.

Don't forget to like Gun Log on Facebook.

Remember, profits go to my next firearm related purchase!

Gun Log 5.1 Release

Attention: The release of the updated coincided with an issue with Apple's App Store.

Apple Says It Has Fixed Server Bug That Led to Crashing Apps

“We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded,” Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD.
If Gun Log 5.1 crashes on launch after the update, do not delete the app. Check and see if there is another update available. Also, if you have backed up the database, secure that backup. If you don't have a backup, and have not deleted the app to reinstall it, the data is still there, so do a backup as described below.

Here are some more links concerning the issue:

I apologize to the users that are effected by this situation. If you do not have backups of your data then the data is lost.

Gun Log 5.1 is now Available

Note that the Gun Log 5.1 database is not compatible with Gun Log +P 2.7. Do not copy the Gun Log 5.1 database onto Gun Log +P 2.7 or earlier. It will not work.

Back up your data before the upgrade.

There are many new features, but the most significant is that most pickers now have the ability to customize the list.

Gun Log 5.1 under development

Gun Log version 5.1 is well underway. One of the main goals is to make custom lists. I do not want to be adding weapon makers, calibers, and the such for years to come.

Look, an action type! Requested by the users in Australia.

Notice the larger notes fields. Also, is the firearm personal or issued? Maybe your job, such as law enforcement issues you a firearm.

Back at the top of the weapon details, tap the "Make" button for this new "Maker Picker".
Tap the "Compose" button at top right to create custom entries.

Just enter some text, tap the blue "+" button to add it to the list, tap "Done" at the bottom right when finished.

Look, there it is!

If you show "All" the list is sorted and there is our customer maker!

Default just shows the built in values.

Calibers can have custom entries as well.

Custom caliber entries are at the bottom of the list when showing "All".

Gun Log 5.1 is a significant change. It will be several more weeks before it is finished. When it is done, the Gun Log database will not be compatible with Gun Log +P, this day has been coming for a while. When I update Gun Log +P I will see if it is possible to make it compatible.

I will probably evaluate a price change for Gun Log after 5.1 releases and is shown to be stable. So, it is a good time to get Gun Log just in case the price goes up. I might not change the price, but I will consider it.

Send me emails if you have ideas or concerns.

Gun Log Future Plans

I am currently designing the next release of Gun Log and Gun Log +P. The next release will be a significant update. This will take several weeks. I may release the changes through several updates or wait and deliver it all in one release. I truly expect this to take a long time. If you have any requests it would be the time to email them.

The external ballistics calculator has been updated.

There are two controls, one of which controls the detail level of the output and the other controls the maximum range of the calculations.

Here is a screen shot.

Gun Log 4.3 is available!

(If you want export, printing, and email you should use Gun Log +P)
(Check out the NRA American Warrior,  edition Number 5.)

I have been working on the UI of Gun Log. Gun Log +P has a lot of features that are applicable to Gun Log so I brought some of those features over.

As with the original release of Gun Log, the purpose of this app is to give back to the firearm friendly community. I have had users ask me why I do not charge more. I think it the app is worth a lot more myself, but I must stick to the original purpose and promises of the app.

The new version has changed some views. The flow and working of the application hasn't changed so I will not go into a detailed tutorial because of the new features. Please browse the blog for older posts for details on entering data.

Gun Log 4.3

The main views can get very long. Sorting and filtering help manage those long lists.

When picking an ammo for a firing set the ammo picker now filters on the caliber of the weapon.

Here are a few screen shots. Notice the tool bar at the top with filter and sorting buttons.

Notice the ammo and weapons picker changes. If a firing set, if you pick the weapon first the caliber of the weapon is passed to the ammo picker. If you have not entered a round count for your ammo the app considers you have no ammo on hand, so click "All" at the upper right. You can always turn the caliber filter off as well.

Following are iPhone/iPod touch screen shots. Enjoy the new features. Thank you!.

Gun Log 4.2 Available

Thank you for buying Gun Log 4.2.

Please rate Gun Log on the App store. With every new update the ratings are cleared.

What does a paper log book cost? Gun Log is probably cheaper than that!

This release is a minor release fixing some issues that have been reported.

Here are some screen shots of Gun Log 4.3.

Gun Log keeps your data safe. There is no email or iCloud services in Gun Log. If you want iCloud sync and printing/exporting of reports then you should use Gun Log +P.
